Mass media is finally waking up to the power of design. With the growing popularity of interior design related television shows and segments in newspapers and magazines, more and more people want to know how they can be a Designer.
Oregon has four schools that offer degrees in Interior Design, two that are right here in the metro area. University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Art Institute of Portland, and Marylhurst University all offer at least a Bachelor's degree, and Portland Community College offers an Associate's degree with the capability of transferring to a 4-year institution.
All curriculums are not created equal. In choosing a program you must decide what kind of design you want to focus on (Residential/Commercial? Healthcare/ Hotels?) what amount of time you want to commit the education, and how much money you're willing to spend, to name a few. Here is a brief profile of each of the Interior Design programs offered in Oregon:
- University of Oregon's Interior Design Program
- Oregon State University Program
- Portland Community College
- Marylhurst University's Interior Design Program
- Art Institute of Portland's Interior Design Program
Until recently, the term Interior Designer was available to anyone prepared to voice an aesthetic opinion. It can be confusing when decorators, designers, architects, the self-taught, and those with advanced professional degrees are all under the same "awning" title. Whether you choose one the above mentioned means of formal study, or prefer the "DIY do-it-yourself" route; there are many local options, and resources to help you along the way. Good Luck!
