Muu-Muu’s on 21st

Posted By Lauren

I think my jaw dropped when I entered Muu-Muu’s on NW 21st. The first thing I saw was this bizarre lamp on a pedestal surrounded by candles. It was as if someone had cut the neck off a fat vase and covered it with fish scales that emit a soft yellow glow.

The overall tone of the room was orange. The floor tile was orange. Strings of small orange lights were arched across the ceiling. Everything that was not orange seemed to be balance of red and yellow. The back wall was a red quilt-like material. The right wall was a red curtain with spaces to show actual homemade quilts. Booths were covered in rough red velour. Somewhat flat, single yellow light bulbs hung from the ceiling. The designer of Muu-Muu’s had decided to deal with the exposed ventilation problem in the best way that I have seen so far. A dropped ceiling was created using rows of slightly curved metal panels that reflected the orange lights. From the spaces between the panels, more mellow yellow light shone through.

Another fabulous decorating idea was the partition between the bar area and the restaurant area. It is a series of square frames. Every other frame is empty. The alternating frames are woven with a loose reed net. It separates the two spaces with a visually appealing pattern while still allowing people to see what’s going on at the bar and tables.

I’m a sucker for interesting lights and lighting patterns and Muu-Muu’s won my heart for that. Yet, however classy Muu-Muu’s may look upon entrance, the main part of the restaurant smells like fast food. The back has that stale cigarette smell of that moment when you know you have chosen the wrong hotel. No amount of clever interior decorating can mask a disappointing odor.
