Mirador Community Store
Posted By LaurenMy friend recommended Mirador to me as a place for all things wonderful and domestic. Her next purchase there would be giant glass storage jars. Where else can you find such frankly useful things?
This is an unabashedly left-wing oriented store with a commitment to community and sustainablity. Many of the items are done by local craftspeople (either Portland or in the Northwest), such as lovely suncatchers made to benefit the charity St. Vincent de Paul. Some are imported from around the world, but Mirador usually explains how they are part of a helpful fair trade system. A beautiful and functional example is the collection of rosewood serving utensils made in Thailand from “recovered and/or plantation grown” rosewood. Mirador carries many crafts that are made from recycled components, including mirrors constructed from locally “reclaimed” materials and intriguing clocks made from bicycle or computer parts.
Mirador loves to focus on the kitchen. There are so many attractive and high quality cooking, baking, and cleaning supplies. I was immediately in love with the extensive assortment of extremely colorful dish towels and oven mitts. I can’t stress enough how well Mirador manages to pair the beautiful and the functional. There are handsome handmade brooms from Eugene that one could use on the floor or hang on the wall as art.
Mirador does gift registry for weddings, commitment ceremonies, babies, and birthdays. The list of requested items is posted online. Gifts can be ordered for the recipient straight from the Mirador website (or by phone or by visiting the store). If I were to ask for anything from Mirador right now, it would be for a set of colorful organic cotton sheets (grown by family co-ops in India) and a couple plush orangic cotton and wool pillows.
