Sulan Lighting

Posted By Lauren

We’re well past the Winter Solstice. December 22nd was the darkest day we’ll experience this year, meaning that the night was the longest and the day was the shortest. From now until the Summer Solstice in June, the days will be getting longer and the nights shorter. There’s a sense that at least now things can’t get any worse. Although the rain isn’t really linked to the solstice, once I pass December I start to look forward to the parting of the clouds into a sunny late spring.

In the meantime, we’ve got a while to wait. The days are still pretty short, the nights are still long, and the rain is definitely still there. Every winter I kick myself for not investing in some full spectrum lightbulbs. Many people experience a depression both in mood and activity in response to the dimming sunlight in the fall and winter. This is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (appropriately given the acronym SAD). There is subsantial evidence to suggest that exposure to exposure to certain types of light during the dark months can alleviate SAD. Full spectrum lights mimic the sun more than regular artificial lights by providing a wider range of light lengths (but minus the UV).

There is a company in Portland called Sulan Lighting with an excellent slogan, “Change a bulb, Change your life.” This company sells a variety of full spectrum lights designed to help with SAD. The lights differ in terms of which lengths they emit more of, resulting in slightly different colored neutral lights. Which one you should pick depends on your preference. The lights can also be organized in terms of which season of the year they mimic more. Would you prefer a fall light or a summer light? Mix and match to your desire.
