Noun- A Person’s Place for Things

Posted By Lauren

Eye candy and mouth candy team up.

Stephanie, the creator of Noun, went to highschool in Ohio with the creator of St. Cupcake. In the time between now and then, the two intrepid ladies made their way to Portland, got jobs, and got sick of them. A couple years ago they both decided together that they wanted to quit their normal boring work and start their own businesses. One created St. Cupcake in North West. Stephanie opened Noun on Belmont on November 1st of this year and soon a new St. Cupcake will join her in the same space.

Noun is a “person’s place for things.” Most of its items come from estate sales but another set of stuff is made by Portlanders. Stephanie has birdcages and breadboxes, old pitchers and new pictures done by local artists. Noun is about generating new ideas for old objects. A modern person may not have use for an old-fashioned birdcage, but it can be used to hold candles, or plants, or to display other lovely things. According to Stephanie, all things have multiple uses. The meaning of a thing depends on the context.

It sells a variety of household items for a variety of purposes (including old birdcages that are better for display or ornamentation rather than holding birds). Noun has cookie jars and cups, sugar bowls and flour canisters, furnishings and accessories. […]
