How Not to Set a Fashion Show

Posted By Lauren

Tonight I attended the winter fashion show by Trendi Collections in NE called So Iceey. It was held in the second floor of Spice Restaurant, just a few blocks away from the boutique. I’m sure the venue was chosen for the convenience but it was a pretty poor setting for a fashion show.

Approaching the door to the room, attendees were greeted by two dead pine trees in plastic pots. Guests then emerged in a half-heartedly lit room. There were no stage lights; the only lighting for the entire room, stage included, was from small track lights suspended on cables. For a fashion show, one does not want so much light that the models get washed outs. However, if there is not enough light no one will be able to see the clothes that are being showcased. The light level was appropriate for a bar, not a show. Behind the stage a tacky handmade and spray-painted banner read “Trendi Collections.” The stage was hideous. It was constructed of two rectangular boxes covered in gray carpet forming a T. In some places the carpet was rubbing off. Stains on the stage were visible from the first row of guests.

Guests who paid extra to get VIP seating and treatment were for some reason seated near the back and only got a good view of the models as they retreated from the stage.

The room was painted a pleasant shade of peach, but upon closer inspection, the paint job was prematurely finished around the windows. The floor is beige tile at the entrance, then a stained off-white carpet, then an ugly gray carpet. The border to each section is that ugly black stripping that makes me think of carpet transitions in elementary schools. I liked the wooden supports, the exposed beams, and wooden ceiling but this was spoiled when I noticed that the pipes to the sprinklers were exposed.

Spice Restaurant is really only doing their interior decorating halfway and made the Trendi Collections fashion show look worse than it already was. What a disappointment.
