Grand Opening of Winston’s

Posted By Lauren

I have good feelings about this place.

Winston is observant and charming. He welcomes me in and doesn’t mind when I drip the Northwest all over the wood floor of his new store.

Winston’s just opened on Wednesday and Winston is still unpacking his treasure chests. But the items he does have out already are wondrous and rare, like the art nouveau Loetz lamp ($1,500) which looks like an alien monument. Or if you’re on a more modest budget like me, there baubles in the $20-$30 range, like a bulbous bunch of pink grapes made of glass and a pretty patterned double handed vase. He has furniture and dolls, paintings and antique croquet sets.

He does consignments and offers dealer spaces; a showcase, a section of the floor. Winston is also a professional buyer. If you you have your heart set on an elusive object, he will hunt it down for you.

About a quarter of his goods are antiques, but the age of the object is not his agenda. He looks for objects that are made well, beautiful, and artistic. Winston moved to Portland because of its recycling culture. We live in a disposable society. Items are rapidly mass produced and forgotten at the same rate. Winston reuses collectible things. Why does an object become an antique? What is special about this object that made people want to keep it for so long? Winston’s store is for things that are destined to become antiques in time. His items are good enough that they will be around when our grandchildren grow up and want them.
