Buy Local- Last Thursday

Today is the last Last Thursday before Christmas and you should go. I love Last Thursday more than almost all other Portland events. Local artists and performers get to set up booths and do their thing on Alberta St. without having to reserve or pay for stalls or performance spaces. It’s guerilla art at no …

Imbibe - Take In the Ambience

Tonight I braved the weather to walk to Imbibe on Hawthorne to meet a friend for dinner. Luckily for me, they had hot toddies on the menu. This is a great restaurant to hit in these dark, cold winter nights because they have a more than decent selection of warm drinks.
The temperature transition from the …

Yurt- The “LITE” Way to Camp

I just got back from a Thanksgiving Weekend romantic getaway on the Oregon Coast. The original plan was we’d get a hotel room somewhere in Oceanside. Somewhere along the way the plan became “Let’s stay in a YURT at Cape Lookout State Park.” “Rustic Yurts ” are available as a lodging …

Green + SW Portland Waterfront Condos = $$$,$$$

Seems I’m commonly spouting off about green condos here in Portland, complete with malice filled diatribes about hippies and hemp… And then I stumble across this USA Today article discussing the Southwest Waterfront project.
Call it “eco-friendly.” Call it “sustainable.” Portland’s $2.2 billion South Waterfront project, rising on a decaying industrial site south of downtown, signals …

Damn Hippies Building Green Again

It is easy to bemoan the overuse of buzzwords like “sustainable” and “green design”. For the most part it seems to be to be P.C. environmentalist appeasement shrapnel from marketing grenade launched by local land developers. It’s easy to become jaded, literally, when “green” can be added as a status symbol amongst our local icons …

The Nagging Question of Exposed Ventilation and Piping

You have quite a dilemma when you have exposed vents and piping. I wish they were always tucked into the ceiling but when you have a pre-made space, you don’t get to make that decision (unless you want to spending the money to drop the ceiling). But you have some options for making …

Thanksgiving Centerpieces

Thanksgiving centerpieces are one of those holiday luxuries that I always think would be nice to have, but I would never pay for. Even if I had lots of money and a big family to impress, I’m still not sure I’d spend the $50.00 or so to obtain one. I grew up in …

Interior Design Workout?

This YouTube movie by a Kamela Mirich is neither useful as interior design advice or a workout. But you have to wonder: what was she thinking?
How embarassing.
I’ve always felt that YouTube was better for vanity than advertisement. She’s no exception. Please don’t be this person.
Has anyone out there used YouTube to promote their …

Vault Martini

I cannot rave enough about the style of Vault Martini.
When you enter, it is through a scalloped screen tunnel. A fire is burning in a white fireplace, complete with a mantel. Above the fireplace is a classy blue-themed painting of a woman in a billowing dress doing what seems like a cartwheel. Around …

How Not to Set a Fashion Show

Tonight I attended the winter fashion show by Trendi Collections in NE called So Iceey. It was held in the second floor of Spice Restaurant, just a few blocks away from the boutique. I’m sure the venue was chosen for the convenience but it was a pretty poor setting for a fashion show.
Approaching the door …
