Pub At the End of the Universe

Posted By Lauren

After a long day at work, I joined friends at the Pub At the End of the Universe, which is not at the end of the universe but rather in a decent neighborhood at the corner of SE 28th and SE Gladstone. I’ve always liked the décor of the place, which is odd; it’s saturated with things that I hate.

On the walls of the entrance room, there are murals of Ancient Egyptian people doing what I suppose are ceremonial things. Most notable is the painting with many naked dancing Egyptian ladies, which makes me have to verify that yes, I’m at the Pub at the End of the Universe. No, I’m not at the Egyptian Club. There are a few other badly painted murals and some very bad art on the walls: from papier-mâché masks to ugly jungle animals. The one aspect of the bar décor that I actually like is the tile mosaic on most of the tables. It’s not intricate mosaic, just some basic decorative patterns in a few somber colors. The bumpy mosaic also makes it a bit difficult to stand beer glasses on the tables. But the fact that someone took the time and had the taste to decorate all these tables really touches me.

Portland is full of really ugly decoration. When I first got to Portland, I was really charmed by all the irony and kitsch. Four and a half years later, it’s gotten old and sometimes I’m really just starving to see something well-planned and pretty. But after a stressful day, all that eclectic hideousness really just feels like home.
